Vader

Felt like I was due for a Star Wars alter. Here we go.

Want To Cube?

What do you get when you combine this...

...with this?

This of course!

Second in the series. The remaining artists are Seurat and Warhol.

DBZ Garruk

As far as references go, I like to experiment with different genres to see how well they sell. Of course I had to get to Dragon Ball Z eventually (despite knowing very little about the anime). Here's Piccolo:

Just a few more days until SCG Atlanta. See you there!

Sizing Up Chun Li

Finished this Chun Li, from Street Fighter, tonight. One things that I've always loved about altering is the maddening details. I thought I do a little extra and show just how tiny some of the details on this are. Check it out:

SCG Atlanta

Currently I'm up watching the quarterfinals of SCG LA. I'm excited to be in Atlanta next weekend. Here's another piece I'll have on me:

Green Is the New Black

Did a second Green Lantern a la Alex Ross.

This week I'll be stocking up my binder for display at SCG Atlanta next weekend. I'll be there Saturday painting somewhere. Be sure to track me down, say hi, and grab a business card!

Voltron II

With Standard PTQs coming up it seems that the Hawk's peak is upon us. To mark the occasion I decided to revisit this idea:

I took process photos while I worked on this and will most likely be working up another tutorial for mananation. I'll keep everyone posted.

Hadoken!

While a lot of my source material comes from comic books, video games invariably enter into the equation. Street Fighter is a popular one. Today I finished a Ken to go with my Ryu:

What a cute pair, right?

Van Gogh

I recently had the opportunity to work on a project that really got my attention. What would a Magic card look like if it was illustrated by a 'museum-worthy' painter? Say this guy for example:

Van Gogh is a great choice. His style is vibrant, unique, and highly recognizable. Here's my take on Van Gogh Jace:

There's talk that this will become part of a set including Picasso, Seurat, and a yet undetermined artist. Here's hoping.

Humble Beginnings

Sometimes it takes a lot to admit how far you've come. Take this recent alter I worked up:

Looks familiar somehow. Oh yeah, my second alter ever comes to mind:

Yikes! A little motivation for anyone who wants to jump into altering, or painting in general. No matter the level of your talent, you can always get better. This one's a little rough around the edges for sure. Please be gentle with any comments.

Octoberfest in March

Over the past three years, I've done some strange commission work. This one for example:

Here are two of my more bizarre requests as of late:

Get it?! They're German!

Want to Hear a Joke?

Finished painting this last night. It's a sneak preview of the tutorial I'm working on for mananation.com.

The Dark Knight Returns and Charity Auction

In case you haven't heard, I'm auctioning off the following piece on eBay to support relief in Japan following the recent earthquake and tsunami. 100% will be donated and I'd love to give as much as possible - so be sure to check it out. There are a little less than two days left: http://bit.ly/hyZWP7

In other news, I just finished these two pieces inspired by Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Miller's style is truly unique, so these were a nice change of pace as far as comic alters go.

That's all for now. I'm currently talking with Trick Jarret of mananation.com about doing some articles on altering. You'll be sure to here from me when everything comes together!

Running the Gambit

I've been doing some commissions of X-Men's Gambit lately - something I've done in the past. I try not to repeat an alter exactly, but that's not to say I won't return to the source material. Here's a look:

Avast, Ye Scalawag

Thought I'd post these commissions for any One Piece fans out there:

Enjoy!

It's Not Easy Being Green

A great alter often starts with a good idea. I've been working on some more character commissions and noticed what great choices the client made:

Who's more worldly than Yoda?! What better riddle than what your top card is? Okay, maybe the Hulk is not so natural. He's still big, dumb, and green though.

Extension Break

While I was in DC this past week I stopped by Dream Wizards in Rockville Maryland for FNM. Their card buyer approached me about two commissions as prizes for an upcoming Legacy tournament. Of course I was happy to oblige:

I don't do a ton of extensions these days, but I must say that they make for good breaks between the sharp, graphic work I'm used to.

Yaaaaaagh!

Here's one of the commissions I worked up for friend and DailyMTG columnist Adam Styborski:

Adam hit it out of the park with this idea! I love how well the scene fits the card. Despite the number of comic references I use, I don't reproduce full frames all that much. This one was a real pleasure to work on. Here's the original for reference:

So Little Time

I had a great two weeks in DC that included a StarCity Open and hanging out with some awesome people. Now it's back to work, and hopefully daily blog posts. Here's some stuff I managed to get done over my vacation:

These three are a result of a winning bid for my Supergirl on eBay. The guy liked it so much he wanted three more.

I have a ton of commissions lined up for this week and next. That means less time for personal work but more updates. Check in often!
