Back to Basics

At the moment it seems that superheroes, villains, cartoons, and other pop culture references are my bread and butter. So let's get back to it:

Have you ever noticed how good the Cobras are at branding? Better than Starbucks.

Something That Could Never Ever Possibly Destroy Us

Blightsteel Colossus didn't get much love when Mirrodin Besieged was released. Let's make him a little more cuddly-looking:

That's better. Let's throw this one in for good measure:

'His crime was silence, and now he suffers it eternally.'

On Guard!

After receiving some great feedback on my Voltron piece - I went for another mural. Stoneforge Mystics have been running rampant lately. Another fairly easy assemble.

Just a few more days until StarCityGame's Open in DC. I'm not able to be there on official capacity, but I'll be painting live and handing out business cards all day Saturday regardless. See you there!

Voltron

Squadron Hawk is the card in the spotlight right now, so I'd be remiss not to work on a set of them. The big problem I've seen with mural pieces in the past is that they're pretty silly if you can't assemble the whole thing in a game. Squadron Hawk's ability fixes that problem, so I had a go:

Flavorful no?

Frazetta's Vampirella

I have loved Frank Frazetta's artwork for a long time but haven't had the chance to recreate much of his work. Decided to take a short break from comic book source material and try my hand at Vampirella:

Frazetta's piece for reference:

Obviously it's hard to live up to the master. I purposely did a touch up on the eyes to make them stand out a little more at the smaller scale. It's not perfect, but this was fun. I'll definitely return to Frazetta's work in the future.

Also, be sure to check out Jeremy Froggatt's article featuring four alter artists including myself! And be sure to support Jeremy in StarCity's Writer Talent Search!

Cartoons

Finished up some cartoons this afternoon. Skeletor was certainly a childhood favorite. Hypnotoad, a bit of a more modern reference.

The Joker

Finished a commission this afternoon (my first Joker):

It got me thinking about what other residents of Gotham I've done over in the past. Well let's see:

I guess it's time to go to town on some male villains.

New Blog and Autobot Memnites

I've been painting cards for about two and half years now, and playing Magic the Gathering for around twelve. At the beginning of 2011, I found myself jobless after a year of teaching abroad in South Korea. What better way to make money than to combine two things I love: painting and being around Magic cards. I had been doing it for a hobby all this time anyway.

So that leads me here - a new blog dedicated to showcasing some of the work I'm producing. The idea is to regularly post work, updates as to what events I'll be attending, and maybe some eBay auctions here and there.

So let's get started with my first ever playset. I have a pretty short attention span and prefer to jump from card to card, but this idea warranted the follow through:

To those who aren't already aware, I'll be attending StarCityGames' Open in DC at the end of the month. I'm still working on the possibility of a table - we'll see. Hope to see a lot of people there!
